“Now love doesn't stop at death - or if it does, it's a pretty poor sort of love! In fact, grief could almost be defined as the form love takes when the object of love has been removed; it is love embracing an empty space, love kissing thin air and feeling the pain of nothingness. But there is no reason at all why love should discontinue the practice of holding the beloved in prayer before God.”
―
N.T. Wright, For All the Saints: Remembering the Christians Departed

Dear friends,
Thank you for being with us last week as we had a lovely time continuing our Communal Discernment as well as a special time at our Annual Meeting. If you missed it, be sure to check out the sermon on our Podcast page.

This weekend we celebrate All Saints: yes, it’s the famous ones, remembered for their remarkable sacrifices and love poured out into the world, and thank heaven for them! We also especially remember all the others of us, living our lives, leaning on Jesus and each other, and probably never being famous for it (nor needing to be).

A key part of celebrating this is to remember all those we have lost, particularly this past year or so, who have gone on before us. We name them in a holy litany in the middle of the Eucharistic Prayer, bringing them to the throne of heaven.

This year I am missing Lyn Shields, a friend of Trinity, and my heart looks forward to meeting Iver Jones, a beloved member of our family of faith, the brevity of whose life among us is heavy on us but who rests in the care of our Lord Jesus (I suspect Jesus’s mother may do some mothering up in heaven as well, in the interim before the Great Day when all things are set right).

ALL SAINTS + NAMES Before Thursday end of Day October 29,
All Saints Day: the day in the church’s calendar when we commemorate not only the famous saints, but all the great mystical-and-real communion of saints who are alive now and, especially, those who have gone before us.

An important part of this commemoration is when the celebrant says the names of the beloved who we have lost in the past year.
Before Thursday end of Day October 29, please send Michael the names of anyone beloved of you who has died this past year or recently, who you would like to have lifted up before the Lord during Holy Eucharist this Sunday.
